Colin Welch

The little boy
can’t pronounce
parasite, but
he understands
what he’s seeing.
The terrier can barely
breathe. Things

beyond words—host
without heartworm,
his hand
along the rough
spine. The boy holds
his mouth tight
with his throat. He
recognizes this
work. He marvels
at the ability
to sustain
without death. Recall:
the ants ground into
the pavement
never listened
to the words that
he spoke just before,

syllables, unknowable,
from somewhere
just above.
